A closer look
These are the ranges that come up most often in practice, assuming the home exercises are actually being done between visits.
Recent simple pain. A pulled muscle, a stiff neck, mild low back pain with no leg symptoms: three to six sessions over two to three weeks is usually enough, and the rest is a home programme.
Sciatica and disc related leg pain. Eight to twelve sessions over six to eight weeks is typical, because nerves settle slowly. Most sciatica improves substantially within six weeks and settles within three months.
Frozen shoulder, knee osteoarthritis, long standing tendon problems. These are measured in months rather than sessions. Frozen shoulder commonly takes several months of treatment and home work. Knee osteoarthritis is often six to eight sessions to build and correct the programme, then reviews rather than continuous treatment.
After a fracture, after surgery, after a stroke. These follow the plan your surgeon or doctor has set. Rehabilitation after a fracture or an operation commonly runs eight to sixteen sessions over two to three months. Stroke rehabilitation is counted in months and continues while there is progress to be made.
What it means for you
Ask for an estimate at the end of your first visit: roughly how many sessions, and what improvement you should notice by when. Anyone who has examined you can give you that, as an estimate to be revised.
What shortens it: starting early, doing the home exercises daily, changing the activity causing the problem, and controlling diabetes, because tissue heals more slowly with high blood sugar. What lengthens it: years of symptoms before starting, nerve involvement, heavy manual work you cannot modify, and skipping exercises between visits.
If you have had six sessions and nothing at all has changed, do not simply buy more. That is the point to review the diagnosis, and sometimes to involve a doctor.
